Our monthly Green Room Sessions at Uncommon Ground will be consolidated into this single event on Thursday May 15th to kick off the Green Festival being held at Navy Pier May 17-18. The featured bands for the night are Arwin and Out for Hours. Representatives from Green Festival will be on hand to talk about the event and hand out 2 for 1 admissions. As usual, the Green Room Sessions are a great chance to meet other sustainable Chicagoans, sample some local appetizers generously provided by Uncommon Ground, have a Treetini (the only martini that plants a tree), and learn more about the upcoming Green Festival. Looking forward to seeing many of you there and please feel free to pass along the invitation to others.

High Design and Low Carbon Two new modern townhouses, designed by architect Nathan Kipnis, AIA, LEED AP, incorporate numerous green features while providing a healthy, comfortable and dramatic interior. Located at 1831-33 Lincoln Street in Evanston, Illinois, the townhomes have been sited to takes full advantage of the sun. The south facing front set of windows captures the low winter sun while calculated overhangs block the summer sun. Solar panels on the roof provide hot water for the domestic water system and are integrated into the high efficiency zoned forced air furnace. Natural flow thru ventilation is designed into the floor plan. The homes are 5+ star Energy Star rated, whichl translates into a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions and energy use. Green materials used include cement fiberboard panels bolted to the exterior, concrete countertops, numerous natural materials on the interior, low V.O.C. adhesives and finishes throughout, minimal use of recycled content carpeting, recycled tire roof decking , and native, draught resistant landscaping. At 2800 square feet each, the units have a minimal footprint while making the most of the site. One unit has an exterior rear yard, while the other has a large roof deck. A series of striking aligned decks on the front façade help to integrate the various materials. The location of the site is itself a green ideal; within a block of the Chicago Northwester train station and the Central Street shopping district.

Global warming, climate change, energy production, and waste disposal has put sustainable architecture and healthy living back in the spotlight. Recent statistics show that Americans currently exhaust too much energy and resources to construct and operate buildings. For instance, buildings use 30% of our total energy and 60% of our total electricity, five billion gallons of potable water are used each day to flush toilets, and construction projects alone generate 2.5 pounds of solid waste per square foot. This alone proves that changes to our standards of design and construction can make a significant impact on our consumption. Learn about current issues in standard construction that have led to environmental degradation and how the practices employed in good design can put us on a positive path. Discussion will center around how designing in harmony with the envinorment, instead of against it, can put us in better touch with our surroundings, and potentially improve our long term health In addition, we will present a case study for a strawbale building constructed in Borrego Springs, California for the Anza-Borrego State Park department of archeaology designed by the presenter. Strawbale is one of a variety of alternative insulators that can be incorporated into Midwestern design and construction with ease. Please visit moss-design.com for more information
