From Sustainable Industry - Climate Action Team on GreenerChattanooga.c om! Wednesday, September 2 5:30 - 7pm green|spaces Sustainable Future will be hosting an event at green|spaces. This will be an informative seminar by Sustainable Future, LLC providing insight on renewable energy grant opportunities that are available for commercial applications. Sustainable Future, LLC David Bolt started Sustainable Futures at Knoxville, TN in 2005 after Mr. Bolt retro-fit his family summer home into a Net Zero Energy Home through the combination of grid-tie energy conservation and solar energy production. Today Sustainable Future has taken his personal experience and applied them to a commercially successful company that provides goods and services that evaluate, reduce and produce energy for homes and commercial building. Sustainable Future's mission is to create a sustainable future by: education people about sustainable living, offer and promote products that support sustainable living, and support a "virtual" community of people interested in sustainable living. Their services can inform you about energy generation and usage reduction options suitable to your particular situation and help you repair and service your energy generation systems. In 2009, Sustainable Future has had contracts and installations for over 100KW of Solar Panels. 5:30-5:45pm Drinks & Appestizers 5:45-6pm Intro & Overview - Harvey 6-6:10pm What is NABCEP - David Bolt 6:10-6:15pm Installations- Grid/Off Grid - Mike Butler 6:15-6:20pm Grants, Tax, Break Even - Patrick West 6:20-6:25pm Evaluate, Reduct & Produce - Mike Butler 6:25-6:30pm Grant Process - Mary Speight 6:30-7pm Q&A http://www.sustainab lefuture.biz/ Visit Sustainable Industry - Climate Action Team at: http://community.gre enerchattanooga.com/ groups/group/show?id =2831285%3AGroup%3A2 996

TVA is beginning a comprehensive study of its energy choices for the future and requests your comments on the scope of this study. The public is invited to submit comments including at the scoping meeting scheduled in Chattanooga on Tuesday, July 21, 2009; 4pm – 8pm at UT Chattanooga (UTC), University Center Chattanooga Room. Your Chance To Tell TVA To Emphasize Efficiency & Renewable Energy -- Not New Coal and Nuclear Power Plants. The purpose of this study is to develop a plan that TVA can enact to achieve a sustainable future and meet the electrical energy and environmental stewardship needs of the Tennessee Valley over the next 20 years. As part of the study, TVA will identify and evaluate a range of programs, actions and projects for meeting these needs. TVA will then select and implement the plan that best meets the goals of its Strategic Plan and Environmental Policy and the goals of valley residents. This study will combine aspects of a traditional utility industry integrated resource plan with an evaluation of methods that TVA could implement, both alone and in partnership with others, to improve its stewardship of the valley’s air, land, and water resources. The results of the study will be presented in a new integrated resource plan and associated environmental impact statement. How to Participate TVA published a Notice of Intent (62 kb, Adobe PDF) formally launching this study on June 15, 2009, and requests your comments on the scope of the study. Here’s how you can submit your comments: Attend one of the upcoming scoping meetings. (The one in Chattanooga is listed above) Complete the scoping questionnaire. Type your comments into this form. You may add your e-mail address to receive project updates. E-mail your comments to IRP@tva.gov. Fax your comments to (865) 632-2345.

ALL DAY HIKE: Farr Gap to the beaches of Chilhowee Lake via Tallassee Mt. MEET at 8:20 AM Saturday July 18 at the Cherohala Welcome Center, Tellico Plains, the 3rd building to the left when heading east on the Cherohala Skyway (TN Hwy 165). Tellico Plains is about 2 hours from Chattanooga, 15 minutes from Madisonville. It’s about an 8 hour hike, depending on route, and counting time at the lake but not counting drive time. I rate the hike as difficult, meant for people who routinely hike for a whole day. Between Farr Gap and the lake, the hike will pass through an area that the Southern Appalachian Forest Coalition wants added to the Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness. Jeff Hunter, of the Southern Appalachian Forest Coalition, will be along. (I'm assuming that Jeff & SAFC won't mind the exposure). You may want to bring a swimsuit, towel, lunch, liquids, & flip-flops. (Both beaches are gravelly, their size depending on lake level). I will be taking 4L of water for my own use, half of it frozen. We LEAVE at 8:30 AM Saturday July 18 from the Cherohala Welcome Center, Tellico Plains: the 3rd building to the left when heading east on the Cherohala Skyway (TN Hwy 165). GLOBAL WARMING TASK FORCE MEETING CHANGE FROM JULY 9 TO THURSDAY, JULY 16 LOCATION CHANGE FROM ZOO TO DOWNTOWN LIBRARY (1001 BROAD STREET) 6:30 p.m. We ordinarily hold our monthly meeting on the second Thursday of each month, but we have an opportunity to join forces with RePower America on this third Thursday instead. During the meeting we will consider strategies that will influence passage of the kind of energy bill in the US Senate we want. One that supports the slowing of climate change and reduction of our carbon footprint. As you know such a bill has passed in the House. Now it's time for Senators to step up. During this debate and discussion time before the vote, people of faith should speak up in favor of an energy bill that includes climate change controls and emphasis on renewable energies. It's a matter of stewardship and justice. How do we do it most effectively? That's what the meeting is about. BE THERE! To know more about RePower America, go to http://www.repoweram erica.org/. Tennessee has a state office based in Nashville. Sandy Sandra Kurtz sandykurtz@me.com (423) 892-5237

St. 109 Chattanooga, TN 37405 When: Friday June 26, 2009 at 6pm (RSVP required by calling Rock/Creek at 423.266.8200 ext: 1112. Leave a message with your Name, Number, and Number of expected attendees) Doug Scott, one of the country’s top experts on the American wilderness movement, will be speaking and signing books at Rock/Creek's Two North Shore location in Chattanooga, TN on Friday June 26, 2009 . Scott will discuss the resurgence of the movement to protect the nation’s remaining wild places, and will give local citizens advice on how to protect special wild areas in Tennessee using the tools granted to us all under The Wilderness Act. Scott, Policy Director for the Campaign for America’s Wilderness, will read from his latest book, Our Wilderness: America’s Common Ground, a celebration in photographs of some of the country’s spectacular wild treasures and the people who have worked to forever protect them. Robert Redford writes in the book’s foreword, ”Inspired by this book…we can get to work on ensuring that more of these last great places on Earth remain wild and pure and free.” Doug is also the author of The Enduring Wilderness: Protecting Our Natural Heritage Through the Wilderness Act, a look at how the law came about and continues to be used today. Local wilderness advocate Jeffrey Hunter will introduce the talk. Books will be available for purchase prior to the event. A living legend in the wilderness and conservation world, Scott helped launch the original Earth Day and worked on every major piece of wilderness legislation in the last 40 years, including direct involvement in the passage of the Eastern Wilderness Acts in 1975 and the recent omnibus lands package (the first environmental legislation signed by President Obama), which protected more than two million acres of wilderness across nine states, including Virginia, West Virginia, California and Oregon.
