TVA is beginning a comprehensive study of its energy choices for the future and requests your comments on the scope of this study. The public is invited to submit comments including at the scoping meeting scheduled in Chattanooga on Tuesday, July 21, 2009; 4pm – 8pm at UT Chattanooga (UTC), University Center Chattanooga Room.

Your Chance To Tell TVA To Emphasize Efficiency & Renewable Energy -- Not New Coal and Nuclear Power Plants.

[ The links to each item in the following announcement can be followed on webpage http://tva.gov/enviro... ]

The purpose of this study is to develop a plan that TVA can enact to achieve a sustainable future and meet the electrical energy and environmental stewardship needs of the Tennessee Valley over the next 20 years. As part of the study, TVA will identify and evaluate a range of programs, actions and projects for meeting these needs. TVA will then select and implement the plan that best meets the goals of its Strategic Plan and Environmental Policy and the goals of valley residents.

This study will combine aspects of a traditional utility industry integrated resource plan with an evaluation of methods that TVA could implement, both alone and in partnership with others, to improve its stewardship of the valley’s air, land, and water resources. The results of the study will be presented in a new integrated resource plan and associated environmental impact statement.

This is an amazing opportunity to help steer the sustainability ship, if TVA indeed hears and heeds good advice from a public that demands accountability and sustainability!

Who attended?

  • 50 attendees
    •  It was incredible altho I wish more people had attended. It was in a large room with tables and TVA experts at each table (ie Conservation, Alternative Energy, Environment, Transmission Lines, Smart Grid, Overall Plan, etc). They had a questionaire/comment table, & a Court Reporter table to record comments. You got to talk to the experts in each area - and really get TVA's human side - and learn what they're doing and dealing with. VERY VERY NICE! Wish more people had attended. PS They even had a Refreshment table. NICE EVENT!!!!
    •  Conversations with TVA staff good, asking them questions, learning some things, making a few challenging points with a kindly attitude, letting them see we are aware and knowledgeable, stimulating them to think with informed questions they could not answer. Also good to converse with fellow citizen activists about the issues. But the main point is comments, expressions of concerns about what TVA should plan get recorded in their scoping records. Although in a sense disguised as simply an IRP ("Integrated Resource Plan") listening session, this event is only a part of the NEPA (National Eviornmental Policy Act) legally required public input process for developing the likewise required Environmental Impact Statement. MOST IMPORTANT: We can all, including anyone who was not at this event, ADD comments at tva.gov until Aug. 14, 2009. And when the draft IRP/EIS is issued "early next year [2010]" there will be a public comment period when we should all "SPEAK UP" in force.
